Todos Somos Familia is a photographic series capturing Carnival in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Every year townspeople cover themselves in motor oil, don devil masks, and run through the streets in chaotic, ecstatic ritual. These Oily Demons embody Mexico’s mastery of subversion: the Devil, once a symbol used to instill obedience, becomes an accomplice to joy and rebellion, turning a colonial symbol of fear into one of mischief, and liberation. Within the mayhem lies community, a pact of belonging no matter how wild or imperfect.
The series is currently exhibited as part of SPECTALiA, the 6th edition of the Every Woman Biennial, New York, 2026.
Each photograph takes its title from a Mexican dicho – a proverb about the devil.
